When it rains on an ordinary patch of land most of the water soaks into the ground. Cities work a little differently. When it rains in cities the water hits hard surfaces like concrete, roads and buildings. It can’t be absorbed so it runs either overland or through drain systems into our waterways. Not only is this a waste of fresh water, but as the water runs over our cities it collects pollutants which end up in our waterways.
At Biofilta, we are using clever design and innovation to solve this problem. We design and install stormwater harvesting systems which store and treat stormwater that runs off our cities. As the water enters our systems rubbish, oils and sediment is removed. The water is then cycled through a vegetated sand filter where plants and beneficial microbes naturally remove nutrients and heavy metals from the water. The water is then stored in below ground tanks and used to irrigate our parks and green spaces, effectively drought proofing our cities. Not only that, our systems prevent pollutants making their way into our rivers and threatening the health of our waterways.
